Sometimes it's good to just sit back and laugh at yourself. So was the case this morning when I read Pierre Henry's piece on theonion.com. The title, "You Must Romance The Music Out Of The Tambourine," sounds like the perfect title of a clinic that I could give at the Texas Music Educator's Association Convention (TMEA), or the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). The difference, of course, is that Mr. Henry's piece is basically "tongue-in-cheek," and I take the playing of percussion accessories very, very seriously. Or do I? ... Anyone who has seen one of my presentations will tell you that I use humor and self-deprecation to help get my points across. I find that it keeps the...
Our line of hammered bronze triangles has been so successful that we've added a new model, the TR-BPH-7 triangle.
Grover Pro hammered triangles differ from others in that we hammer each bronze alloy rod extensively before forming. We have discovered that our special alloy needs random repetitive hammering in order to fully distress the crystalline structure of the metal. (Putting a few random hammer marks in the metal just doesn't cut it!)
Our new model TR-BPH-7 triangle has the same complex harmonic properties of the 6" & 8" model, but with a baseline sonic center which falls between the other two models. A perfect choice for high level symphonic & orchestral playing!

Formed in 2009 at the University of Texas at Austin, "Line Upon Line" percussion has set out to expand their repertoire through the commission of new works. In 2011, the trio was nominated for an Austin Critics' Table Award for Best Classical Ensemble. October 2011 brought the premiere of their project with architects Emily Little and Norma Yancey, seeing times are not hidden, a site-specific work for three performers and custom chimes. line upon line percussion maintains educational and outreach roles with the Austin Chamber Music Center and has performed at various academic institutions around the country. The group has also performed...
During a Boston Pops Orchestra rehearsal yesterday, conductor Keith Lockhart looked up at me immediately prior to an important suspended cymbal entrance. I have a practice of always making sure that, in addition to keeping an eye on the conductor, the conductor can SEE what I am doing (or what I am about to do.) My experience is that conductors always seem to appreciate visual preparedness. It reassures the maestro that: 1) I know where we are, and 2) I am ready to come in. Many years ago, while playing a tambourine part with the Boston Symphony, Maestro Seiji Ozawa was unhappy with the tambourine articulation on the first run through. My mentor, Vic Firth, suggested that I hold the...
