Third Coast Percussion Nominated For A Grammy!

We want to congratulate our friends know collectively as Third Coast Percussion for the recent Grammy nomination! Their nomination is for Best Chamber Music/Small Ensemble Performance.  Here's what Colorado Public Radio said about the album: "Steve Reich turned 80 in October 2016. Third Coast Percussion kicks off the party with this excellent disc that includes a piece from each of the last four decades. Their playing is warm, fluid and very human. The ensemble pulls extra levels of dramatic tension from these pieces with their wonderfully expressive dynamics, especially on Sextet and Mallet Quartet. The tempo for "Nagoya Marimbas" is slightly more relaxed than the original recording from the 1990s and the piece breathes and dances as a result. The contrasts...

The Cymbal "Warm-Up" Myth

Increasingly, I am being asked about the need to "warm-up" cymbals. Time to put this myth to bed... Here is a recent response I sent addressing the question: Regarding cymbal “warming up”, I am not a fan of this concept. It seems to be an extension of the practice of warming up (or priming) a gong prior to striking. As we both know, the mass of a gong is exponentially greater than that of a cymbal - even a large cymbal. Getting a large mass to vibrate takes more time and effort to induce enough vibration to sound fully, so, warming up a large mass object like a large gong/tam-tam makes sense. In my experience there is no need to warm up...

South Carolina All-State Tune Up Day

Join Grover Pro Endorser Professor Scott Herring and the University of South Carolina at the 2016 Percussion All-State Tune Up Day! Students will participate in an afternoon of free instruction and guidance which will be focused on the South Carolina All-State audition material. This is the second consecutive year that this FREE terrific event is being held. If you live within a drive of USC, don’t miss it! Starting December 12 Scott will commence his high school clinic tour.  This year's tour will take him to seven high schools where he will present percussion clinics and work with students.
