My good friend and colleague, Ron Tierno, recently sent me a copy of his fabulous new book, "The Melodic Snare Drummer". Ron takes a uniquely musical approach to his playing, which is reflected in the "play along" exercises contained in his book. I recently presented a snare drum clinic at the Arkansas Day Of Percussion in Little Rock, where I had a chance to play the first of Ron's exercises to demonstrate the use of different closed rolls. Wuhan Philharmonic Percussion section - Xu Yun, Yuan Na, Chris Tusa, and Ma Jing We all hear about all the products imported into the USA from China, well, here's a story of American made products being exported TO China. The Wuhan Philharmonic recently requisitioned a number of our products, including our snare drum, tambourine, triangle and accessories.
Principal Timpanist Chris Tusa heads up the section. Chris is a fine young musician and a Grover Pro Endorser. I met Chris a number of years ago while teaching at Lynn University, where he was attending. He impressed me then, and he impresses me now.
Over the past 85 years there has been a dramatic increase in the number of women entering the percussion world. Our friend, Meghan Aube's, doctoral dissertation on the subject is a comprehensive study into the rising involvement and accomplishments of women within the percussion community. Congrats to Dr. Aube for a job well done!
